The FAA has made it a rule that no one can fly a Tailwheel airplane without receiving an endorsement to do so (61.31(I)). There are some grandfather exceptions to this rule, but it begs the question, why? We’ll, it’s because the handling characteristics of a tricycle gear airplane are different than those of a Tailwheel. These difference are especially significant with takeoffs and landings.
A Tailwheel endorsement is proficiency-based, meaning there are no minimum requirements to obtain your endorsement. However, most pilots take approximately 8-10 hours to obtain the endorsement. And it’s a great add-on that can be done over 1-3 days depending on the amount of time you fly each day.
